Finally, some dirt

Friday was the annual BMA (Boulder Mountain Bike Association) banquet. It was great to celebrate all of the new trails that were built this year, hang out with friends and acquaintances sans helmets and spandex, and get excited about all of the awesome new trails and facilities for '09. I won a dozen cupcakes from Tee & Cakes for the office, which is huge because we go there pretty much every day! All of the good mountain biking vibes got me psyched to hit the trails over the weekend, as I've been doing mostly road riding so far this year.

On Saturday, Spencer, Mike Dizzahl and I did a ride that was a long time coming: Heil Ranch to Hall Ranch (and back) via the new Picture Rock Trail. I made some changes to my position on the Trance X, which had been giving me some pains in my IT bands and knees. The new position felt great and it ended up being a really good ride for me. I felt strong mentally and physically and was riding technical sections I'd normally walk. I forgot how different mountain and road biking are: I was so worked by the end of the day, even though I have been doing 5-hour road rides no problem! I had never ridden Hall before and kind of expected to hate it after hearing everyone talk about how difficult and technical the connector is. But, it turned out to be one of those really fun technical trails, where you want to go back and re-ride a section until you clean it. My biking soul definitely needed that day on dirt!

After Saturday's sweet ride, I'm psyched for next weekend--Spencer and I are taking the IMBA-roo down to Moab to ride the White Rim Trail for Valentines Day. (Yes, we're riding our bikes for 10+ hours to celebrate. Sadistic, I know.) I've been getting tired just "flying" the route in Google Earth, so it should be quite the challenge. The four dozen chocolate chip cookies I baked this evening should help!
